I filmed this one in Tulamben, Bali after the rain absolutely smashed the visibility. When the viz drops, backscatter is inevitable—you can’t bend light around suspended particles—so the goal isn’t “remove it,” it’s “limit it.” In the video I walk through the practical things I actually do on dives when conditions turn to soup, and I show examples from the Pixel 10 Pro, GoPro Hero 13, Insta360 Ace Pro2 and Insta360 X5 (each shot is labelled). The big takeaways are simple: first, stop trying to force shots that just aren’t possible in low viz. Find the clearest water you can (often deeper helps), then reduce the amount of water between your lens and the subject—close-ups and macro-style framing will beat big expansive wides every time. I also talk about why wet wide-angle lenses matter so much underwater: not just for “wider,” but because they let you get physically closer, which means sharper, more colourful footage with less backscatter. Finally, I cover lighting mistakes I see constantly: blasting full power, lighting the water in front of your subject, and aiming lights so they bounce straight back into the lens. Use the least amount of light you need, angle your lights to avoid straight-on reflection, and think about current/surge—approach down-current so you don’t stir up junk that drifts across your shot.
