About This Video

In this homelab series video, I’m walking you through DumbDrop—probably the easiest, no-fuss self-hosted “file dropping” solution I’ve played with in a while. The whole idea is simple: you give people a page where they can drag-and-drop files, and DumbDrop saves them directly onto your server. It’s perfect for stuff like events, or when friends need to dump phone videos/photos somewhere private without you having to deal with complicated sharing workflows. I show what the upload flow looks like (PIN optional, but I recommend using one if you’re making it public), then I hop onto the server so you can see the uploads directory where the files actually land. After that, I pull the Docker Compose setup from the DumbDrop GitHub, paste it into my own compose file, and point the volume to the current directory (I had weird luck with PWD, so I just use “.”). I run it on port 3000, and since my VM already has Nginx + certs, I can also front it with HTTPS. End result: drop a file, it uploads, and it’s immediately sitting on the server—clean and simple, exactly how I like my homelab tools.
