Two years ago I was an intern at Amazon, and now I’m back full-time as a Software Engineer in Vancouver—so in this video I’m taking you through a realistic day of work + life (and what “work-life balance” actually looks like when you’re glued to your desk). My morning starts with the dreaded Slack message: a couple critical data transformation jobs are failing, and it’s probably tied to dependency changes I made. I bring you along to the office for standup, a team discussion meeting, and lunch with the new intern on my team—where I explain the difference between an intern mentor (the “important stuff”) and me as the onboarding buddy (aka, I’m basically a friend who helps you maximize the internship). I also reflect on my original Amazon internship: being intimidated by AWS/CDK, learning how software ships (beta/gamma/prod), and making mistakes like losing weeks of console code because I didn’t version control properly. Now, I’m deep in dependency conflict hell—untangling package versions, documenting what I’ve tried, and learning to share my work more for visibility. After work, I switch gears into cozy creativity: a café session learning Nomad Sculpt on my iPad, then unboxing and setting up my first resin 3D printer (with a healthy amount of nervousness about ventilation and resin safety) to start printing my own little figurines.
