About This Video

In this video, I’m taking you through a pretty typical day in my life as a software engineer at Amazon—standup, a bunch of emails/docs, and then getting deep into coding and testing because it’s end of quarter and my project deadlines are coming up fast. I’m working on a service for our financial accounting team that helps generate reports, and honestly it’s giving “university group project you didn’t start until the last two weeks” energy. The good news is another engineer finally joined my project, so I walk them through the context and tasks so they can ramp up and start helping. I also talk a lot about burnout, because I’ve been feeling it hard lately—dragging my feet to work, rotting in bed, and just feeling low after layoffs. For me, burnout isn’t only being tired; it’s also feeling defeated and dealing with the uncertainty of potential layoffs in the new year. I share what I’m doing to prepare (focusing on what I can control): booking health appointments while I have insurance, and sending my resume to people I know internally because Amazon is huge and some teams are still hiring. I also take a quick cozy break to grab caffeine (I’ve been loving hojicha lattes) and gift my friends before holiday PTO starts.
