In this video, I’m giving you a real peek into what my word study (phonics) private tutoring looks like online, using Science of Reading-aligned routines. The sample lesson content is generally geared toward a Grade 1 learner, but I also show you how I stretch the exact same skills for older students (Grade 2, 3, and even 4) who are still working on reading fluency and spelling accuracy. One of the biggest things I see is that kids can read a word correctly… and then can’t spell that same word five seconds later. So instead of relying on rote memorization (especially with “sight words”), I walk students through sounding out words and mapping sounds to spelling patterns. We systematically deconstruct English words into their sounds and then connect those sounds to the patterns that represent them—because English spelling isn’t random. In fact, there are about 75 basic phonograms (letter combinations) used to represent 45 sounds, and once students start understanding that system, both decoding and spelling get a whole lot less frustrating.
