Kindred Valley came up from Huntington, West Virginia and laid down “Why I’m Crying” with me for a live session that hits you right in the chest. This song lives in that black-and-blue space—distance, confusion, and that moment where you’re staring at the wall trying to make sense of somebody who “can’t quite see through the smoke.” The hook says it plain: “you’re not here to see it, and I don’t know why I’m crying,” and that’s the whole weight of it—knowing something’s done, but still feeling it anyway. This was our second attempt at getting this one on tape, and it worked out exactly like it was meant to. The first time, my power converter kicked the bucket and we ran out of daylight. This time we brought a Yamaha inverter generator and got the session powered the right way so the instruments, mics, and interface could do their job.
