In this session I’m sharing “Arrival” from Isaac Friend — a new voice I’ve been excited to put in front of y’all. Isaac spends his days roofing around Richmond, Virginia, and he’s been carving out time for music for the last decade. He’s a drummer by trade, but over the past few years he’s been writing his own songs, and that turn toward songwriting is exactly what pulled me in when his buddy and fellow musician Evan Barlow reached out. “Arrival” lives in that quiet, Appalachian-adjacent space where a simple lyric can carry a whole world. Isaac sings about love returning and how it changes the everyday: food tasting good, water tasting sweet, feelings coming back after being gone a long time. There’s also that image I love — him and the moon hanging all night, waking up just in time to see his baby. The heart of the song is the line about beauty being everywhere — in the black above, the clay beneath — and how so much of life is the waiting, waiting for you to arrive.
