In this session I filmed 14-year-old Gavin Crutcher doing his original song “Days That I Miss.” Gavin’s from Toney, Alabama, and what got me was how much wisdom he’s carrying at such a young age—he told me he was inspired by listening to his great-grandfather sing, and you can hear that old-soul honesty all through the lyric. The whole song is built around that feeling of seeing the memories in your mind—“the good times and the best times all combined”—and realizing you can’t go on back, no matter how hard you try. Gavin wrote it after a trip into the mountains with friends, and it’s about time slipping away and thinning out on the moments you’d give anything to relive. Lines like “don’t you hate how it all just flies right by” and “it happens once and then it’s gone, lost in time” hit hard because they’re plainspoken and true. We filmed this one at my old high school in Van, West Virginia, and it felt right—real place, real song, and a young songwriter saying out loud what a lot of us feel: there’s always days that I miss.
