In this session I brought y’all “Heather” from Donut Larsen—an original song from a guy who’s lived a whole lot of life the hard way. Donut’s from Birmingham, Alabama, and he’s spent the last 12 years as a homeless musician, hopping trains, busking, and getting through whatever he had to just to make it. That kind of road-earned experience shows up in the writing, and it’s why I wanted to put this one on the channel. Lyrically, “Heather” lives in that place a lot of us know too well: missing somebody, trying to keep your head screwed on straight, and still feeling like every step forward turns into two steps back. He’s walking that “thin line between lying and playing pretend,” with the bottle and the train both sitting there like options, and the hook hits hard—“here we go drinking again.” It’s raw, it’s honest, and it’s exactly the kind of real Appalachian/Americana storytelling I’m always chasing in these live sessions.
