And in my opinion nothing has matched it since — not as a controller, not as an era of game design, not as a philosophy of what games should be. Six buttons. A d-pad. Just enough complexity to express anything. Not so much that your brain is managing inputs instead of playing the game. In this video I talk about why I believe the SNES era was the golden age of gaming — where raw hardware limitations forced designers to find elegance rather than excess — and why I think the perfect modern game is what you get when you take that golden age philosophy and rebuild it with 30 years of quality of life improvements on top. That's exactly what I'm trying to make with Goth Girls vs The Goo. This video also shows real early development footage of GvG in action — wall jumps, double jumps, ceiling traversal, dashing, ground pounding, and the slime block carry mechanic — all built around the SNES controller as a deliberate creative constraint.
