In this Wednesday Grind episode, I’m breaking down the truth behind Etsy’s new SEO guidance from their Keywords 101 article—and what actually works in the real world. I cover the basics of Etsy SEO (how keywords in your titles, tags, categories, attributes, and even your first description lines help you get found), and why “the right views” matter more than just getting a ton of traffic. Etsy shoppers are intent-driven, so your job is to match what they’re already typing into search. Then we get into the good stuff: I analyzed 1,000 recent Etsy bestsellers (about half Halloween, half Christmas) to see if they’re following Etsy’s recommendations. Spoiler: a lot of bestsellers break the “rules.” Titles were often long (100–140 characters) and keyword-dense, readability was sacrificed for coverage, and tags were frequently redundant with variations to chase exact-match searches. But there was also a repeatable pattern: frontload the main keyword + product type, add strong descriptors (personalized, funny, oversized), anchor to season/occasion (often with the year), and end with the audience/recipient. My biggest takeaway: treat the handbook as guidelines, not a magic algorithm update. I recommend testing changes on new or low-traffic listings only—if something is already ranking and selling, don’t touch it and break what’s working.
