In this video I spent 24 hours exploring Furong Town (Furongzhen) in Hunan, China — an ancient town that was literally built on top of a 60-meter waterfall. I stayed inside the scenic area (entry was 108 RMB per person) and woke up to a balcony view of the waterfall splitting into multiple drops. Then I went straight in to see the wild part: you can actually walk underneath the waterfall, and yeah… it gets properly wet down there. Standing under it with water crashing through the town is one of those “how is this real?” moments. I also dig into the history and the “how did they build this?” side of it. The town was built by the Tusi kingdom and became their capital, chosen by the Tujia people for water access and defense. These guys were engineering geniuses — driving massive wooden pillars into cliff bedrock and using interlocking beams that can flex during earthquakes, plus elevated stilts (10–20m high) to deal with floods. The waterfall wasn’t just pretty; it was the ultimate defense, turning the whole place into a fortress. To round it out, I tried the local food (spicy-sweet mung bean tofu and pork mushroom noodles) and even did a wine tasting with everything from jasmine and lychee to a strong 32% wolf berry-style liquor. Great flavors, great prices, and an unreal setting.
