I run Starlink on our shop, our house, a remote cabin in the mountains, and on multiple vehicles—so this video isn’t “front lawn speed test” content. After about 8,000 miles across the US and Mexico this summer, I wanted to lay out the real-world weaknesses of each Starlink antenna: the Standard kit, the Mini, and the brand-new Gen 3 Performance kit that costs an astounding $2,000. I also explain why comparing these with quick speed tests is basically bogus—beam switching, obstructions, plan priority, and whether you’re moving matter more than people think. For the Standard kit, I break down why it’s the best value for stationary setups (especially with the pivot mount), but also why it’s not ideal for vehicle mounting: portability, power draw, wind rating, waterproof rating, and overheating when it’s close to a hot roof. The Mini is my favorite overall because it’s light, portable, and low power—if you respect the caveats: it still needs a legit case/mount, placement matters a ton for motion data, and cable/power spikes can absolutely ruin your trip if you aren’t prepared. Then I cover what the $2,000 Performance dish actually buys you: real durability (waterproofing, wind rating, heat rating), direct mounting, wider field of view, and a serious power supply—while being honest that today, speeds aren’t dramatically better until Starlink’s future network catches up.
