About This Video

Good morning, good afternoon, good evening—whatever time of day it is where you’re watching from. In this video I walk you through my full truck tent camping set up from start to finish, because I get asked all the time by folks who are just starting out and want to know how to do it the right way. I start with the basics that matter most: getting your truck as level as you can (I can live with about 2°), clearing the bed, and keeping your gear in totes so it stays organized, easy to reach, and easy to clean up. From there I show you exactly how I set up my Pitman Outdoors Easy Up truck bed tent—poles, color-coded sleeves, clips, the ridge line pole inside the tent, and the part that always takes a little fiddling: finding that front arch pocket. I also go over the rainfly, including how I tell front from back, how I stretch it out so I can throw it over solo, and how those Velcro straps lock it to the frame. Then I walk around the truck strapping everything down, including the sleeves that help keep buckles from scratching up your paint, and I talk about why I like the air gap on this rainfly for better airflow. Finally, I cover sleeping setup—my AirBedz mattress, pillow, and a lightweight bag—and why truck tent camping can feel safer for a lot of people. And I’ll say it again: if your tent gets wet, even from heavy dew, dry it out when you get home or you’re going to open that bag up next trip to a moldy, nasty mess.
