Good morning, good afternoon, good evening—whatever time it is where you’re watching this. In this one, Fiona and I get back out for a solo hot tent camping night in the woods with the Pomoly StoveHut, and I put a small packable stove to work the way I actually use it: to cook and to take the edge off, not to “save” me overnight. I walk you through how I guy out the chimney using a taut-line knot, and I also show the bowline (and yes, it’s “bowline,” not “boline”—don’t let anybody tell you different). Once camp’s set, we process firewood with a little cordless chainsaw, get the stove rolling, and settle into that warm, quiet rhythm that makes winter camping so good. For supper, I cook Old Bay chunky clam chowder with extra clams right on the stove—stirring it constantly so it doesn’t scorch on the titanium—and I finally do it “right” with oyster crackers. As the woods get dark crazy early (it looked like midnight, but it was only 6:00), we listen to owls and what sounded like something walking behind camp—probably a coyote. Overnight temps were right around freezing, and I was honestly impressed how warm that little titanium stove kept the tent, even though my sleep system is what I rely on. Morning is oatmeal with almond butter and a high-octane espresso, then we ball everything up into a frozen mess and deal with it at home.
