About This Video

Yes, people, we are back. In this video I take a $7 junk-store find—a rusty old WR Case XX medium 44 Stockman that’s missing the main blade—and I see if I can breathe some life back into it. I don’t have some fancy workshop, so I’m working off a makeshift garage bench and using the kind of stuff most folks already have: safety gear, 220 grit sandpaper, a wire wheel in a drill, precision screwdrivers, mineral oil, and a couple buffing wheels with compound. The big goal here is simple: get the rust and grime out, get the action smooth again, and make it a worthwhile pocket knife to actually carry. I start by straightening a bent blade, then I get down inside the housing with a light and precision screwdrivers to scrape out years of nasty buildup—especially around the nail nick area where grime loves to hide. After sanding and brushing, I soak the knife in mineral oil and keep working the blades every 20–25 minutes until the snap comes back and those “nail breaker” pulls aren’t so miserable. From there, I polish the bolsters and blades with jeweler’s rouge and plastic compound, then finish by putting a fresh edge on with a wet stone. The before-and-after is night and day: cleaner, shinier, rehydrated handle, and a knife that’s finally worth carrying again.
