What even is “meta” in audio right now? In this video I talk about how the rise of the B&K 5128 and newer measurement standards pushed people to look for a new target, and how JM1 became this “new normal” that brands are either chasing—or accidentally landing on. The Kiwi Ears KE4 is one of those sets that basically sits right on that lane: a $199 2DD + 2BA isobaric IEM that measures close to JM1 with a bit of bass boost, and the big question is simple—does it actually sound like the 2024 meta? I go through the unboxing (simple but clean), build and fit (larger shells, but surprisingly fatigue-free with a near-perfect seal), and I also call out the included Flex tips and one of the best stock cables I’ve used—premium feel, great look, but only single-ended and non-modular. Sound-wise, the KE4 is all about balance: full, thick bass that doesn’t bleed into the mids, a rich and forward midrange that can get a bit too warm for my taste, and a treble that’s detailed but intentionally safe and inoffensive. The upside is insane versatility across genres; the downside is it can feel a bit “too safe” and not as emotionally exciting. I also compare it to sets like the Kiwi Ears Quartet, Simgot SuperMix 4, TRN(?) QT9 MKII, CCA Hydro, and Simgot EA1000 to show where the KE4 wins (consistency, tonality, safe recommendation) and where it loses (detail/technical wow factor and excitement).
