xMems and DSP are relatively new tech for portable audio and some companies are taking advantage of all this potential. HiBy Digital is one of the first to utilize both in one, but how did they do? About This Video

In this video I take a look at the HiBy Digital Xeno, and why I genuinely think DSP + xMEMS might be a real “future of portable audio” direction—once it’s implemented properly. I’m not here to pretend I’m an engineer, so I keep it layman: xMEMS is that super small, super efficient silicon driver tech with a really fast transient response, and DSP (in my use case) is basically “DAC + EQ in one.” The Xeno is HiBy Digital’s second IEM after the Zoey, and it’s a Kickstarter project that’s trying something different: xMEMS + DSP, plus a graphene dynamic driver, dual DACs (CS43131 + ES9018C2M), and a pretty feature-packed inline console. I go over specs, build, fit, features, sound, and then my actual problems with it. Fit and ergonomics didn’t work for me—lightweight, yes, but it felt a bit cheap, the nozzle/shell/cable combo just wouldn’t sit right, and the cable is non-detachable (which is kind of an xMEMS limitation right now). Sound-wise, I don’t think it’s the best stock-tuned IEM: bass is smooth but not super textured, mids are decent with a nice upper-mid emphasis, and the treble is defined but can be peaky/uneven. What makes the Xeno special is EQ. This is one of the most “EQ-able” IEMs I’ve owned, especially in the treble region, and I honestly don’t think it was meant to be listened to stock. The big catch is that HiBy Digital targets casual users, and this level of parametric-style EQ (plus PC-only firmware updates) can be daunting—so the concept is exciting, but the execution is still very first-gen.
