In this video I walk you through the “Sitting-Rising Test” (a Brazilian doctor studied people ages 51–80) where your ability to get down to the floor and back up—without using hands or knees—was a strong indicator of longevity. For every point people lost on that test, their risk of early death went up by 21%. So I have you try it with me, score yourself out of 10, and then we talk about what your body might be trying to tell you if that felt rough. Then I call out the villain in the room: the chair. Chairs lock most of us into that 90° hip angle all day, and if you don’t move it, you lose it. When you’re leaning into a backrest, you’re not using your core or lower back much either—so over time things get weaker, balance gets worse, and falls become a bigger deal (especially after 65). Floor sitting gives you built-in mobility: hips, knees, ankles, posture, and the simple up-and-down practice that helps you keep your independence. If you’re creaky (no judgment), start with 5–10 minutes a day—TV time, meals, leaning on the couch, whatever.
