The S.M.S.L M200 is a mid range DAC offering from S.M.S.L that offers a ton of great features for the price as well as balanced outputs. I think for its price it is a very compelling option, however if you want one hurry up and buy it because AKM based DACs are going to be scares over the next 6 months due to their recent factory fire. HUGE thanks to APOS Audio for sending this out for review. Be sure to check out their Black Friday Sales. About This Video

In this review I’m taking a look at the S.M.S.L M200, a mid-range fully balanced DAC that normally sits around $280 (and was $252 on sale when I filmed this). Huge thanks to APOS Audio for sending it out—along with the SP200 amp that I’ll be reviewing separately. Build-wise, it’s basically a solid all-metal box with the only real sore point being the volume knob, which feels cheap and wobbly compared to the rest of the unit. Connectivity is where the M200 really flexes: XLR and RCA outs, USB and optical inputs, plus Bluetooth with all the fancy codecs. I also walk through the menu system and remote. You’ve got multiple digital filters, DSD options (which I don’t personally use), screen brightness, and the “sound color” modes—which I interpret as basically off / tube-ish / crystal-ish. Sound-wise, I compared it primarily to the Schiit Modius since it’s also an AKM balanced DAC. The biggest difference I heard was imaging: the M200 has a tighter, more compressed and focused center image, while the Modius feels a bit more spacious down the middle. Overall, the M200 leans slightly analytical, has good detail and dynamics for the price, and nothing about it really bugged me sonically. It’s not my absolute favorite at the price point, but if you want balanced outs, Bluetooth, and a feature-rich DAC that sounds very solid, it gets my recommendation—especially if you’re trying to grab an AKM-based DAC while supply is tight.
