Editing is one of the most vital aspects of writing a book, but it’s also one of the most demanding. While writing is often romanticized, editing is where the magic truly happens—or at least that’s how I like to think of it! Today, I’m going to walk you through how I edit my books from start to finish. This will give you a clear idea of my process, and it might just help you create your own editing routine. Grab your favorite notebook and let's dive into it. ✨Writing Handles: Twitter: @marviecoelho Blue Sky: @marianavcoelho.bsky.social Instagram: marianavcoelho_author ↳ Timestamps 00:00 - Introduction 00:22 - The Book Notebook: Where the Ideas Live 02:14 - The Spreadsheet: Getting Organized 03:43 - Mapping It Out on Scrivener 04:47 - Exporting to Word for the Editing Grind 05:37 - One Pass for Developmental/Consistency Edits 06:17 - Export to Kindle for a Full Read-through 08:12 - Go Back to Word and Make Changes 09:00 - Conclusion and Key Takeaways ↳ Links and Resources ✽ Book Your Productivity Consultation Here: https://calendly.com/productivityforhumans ✽ My Free Resource Library: https://shorturl.at/ikuL0 ✽ Project Planning Framework: https://productivityforhumans.notion.site/Project-Planning-Framework-2295cb02eea0475eabc1f7862f2ebeea?pvs=4 ✽ Start Using Notion (this is an affiliate link): https://affiliate.notion.so/y2903zib47ba ✽ Exclusive Videos, Tutorials and Templates: https://go.nebula.tv/mariana ✽ Subscribe Our Weekly Newsletter: https://productivity-for-humans.ck.page/ca598b2b3c ↳ Credits ✽ Editing: @MaryAmongStories ✽ Stock imagery and footage provided by Ground News ✽ Music provided by Epidemic Sound ↳ Connect With Me ✽ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/marianasscorner ✽ My website: https://productivityforhumans.com ✽ For sponsorship inquiries, please contact my team at marianastudycorner@standard.tv ✽ For any other inquiries, please reach out at info@productivityforhumans.com ☰ FTC Disclaimer This video is sponsored by Nebula

About This Video

In this video, I walk you through my full manuscript editing process—the exact routine I use as a part-time author to stay organized, calm, and consistent. I start with my Book Notebook (my ā€œhome baseā€ for ideas, loose notes, and anything that needs to exist before it becomes a clean draft), then I move into a spreadsheet so I can actually see what I’m working with: chapters, scenes, status, and the kind of edits each section needs. Once I’m clear on the structure, I map everything out in Scrivener so the manuscript has a solid backbone before I do the heavy editing. From there, I export to Word for the real editing grind. I do a dedicated pass for developmental and consistency edits—this is where I’m checking logic, pacing, character details, and whether the book is doing what it’s supposed to do. Then I export to Kindle and read it like a reader, start to finish, because that’s the fastest way for me to spot what feels off. Finally, I go back into Word and implement the changes. The big takeaway: editing gets easier when you give it a system—one tool for ideas, one for organization, and a clear sequence of passes.
