Every once in a while I get a call to play drums with a dueling pianos group, and it's an experience unlike any other gig I encounter on a regular basis. It's all requests, moving at a pace faster than any other musical ensemble outside of DJ. Factor this in with meeting new musicians an hour before the set, and learning to follow them on the fly, and it makes for a fun, yet challenging gig. 0:00 Intro 3:31 Arrival & Set Up 3:51 Gig Clips 6:35 Tear Down & Travel 7:04 Wrap Up Use this link to shop at Sweetwater, and support my channel by doing so: http://sweetwater.sjv.io/5g0gxn Don't forget to subscribe to my channel: https://www.youtube.com/c/malonedrum?sub_confirmation=1 _____________________________________________________________ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/malonedrum/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/malonedrum Website: https://www.malonedrum.com Email: malonedrum@gmail.com ___________________________________________________________ If you want to support my work and leave a tip on Venmo (@MikeMaloneDrum) or PayPal (malonedrum@gmail.com), I’ll happily share my PDF transcription with you! About This Video

In this video I’m taking you along on one of the most fast-paced gigs I ever get called for: a dueling pianos show. Every time I do one of these, it’s a totally different animal than a “normal” band gig—because it’s basically nonstop requests, constant pivots, and the pace is closer to a DJ set than a typical ensemble. On top of that, I’m meeting new musicians about an hour before downbeat, so a big part of the job is listening hard, locking in fast, and following whoever’s driving the moment. I show the whole flow of the night: arriving, setting up, some gig clips so you can feel how quick the transitions are, and then teardown and travel. The big takeaway is that this kind of gig rewards adaptability more than perfection—if you can keep solid time, catch the cues, and stay calm when the song list changes every two minutes, you’ll have a blast. It’s challenging, but it’s also one of the most fun “working drummer” situations I run into.
