This was not the first printed reference to the Mai Tai, but it is the oldest recipe that we know of right now. The late 1950s was when the Mai Tai really took off. Travelers from Hawaii returned home wanting one of these Mai Tai and then there were the travel writers claiming the Mai Tai as the best drink from Hawaii. This recipe was apparently given to Mrs. Leone Siedman by a bartender at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel. The drink is very much a Mai Tai, with the big difference that it calls for a hefty ounce of lemon juice in addition to 1/2 oz of lime.
