The drink was first created by J. Popo Galsini sometime in either 1967 or possibly 1966. While the drink started it's life named the X-15 after the reusable rocket, a Kona Kai regular from Douglas Aviation encouraged Galsini to change the name to the Saturn. The Saturn V was a rocket that Douglas was currently working on, also in Huntington Beach, while the X-15 was created by American Aviation which was a rival from Los Angeles.
