Currently, this is the only rum available in the United States that fits into the category of rum that Trader Vic and others were using for recipes that called for a specific type of Martinique rum. This molasses-based rum is 46% ABV and aged in ex-cognac casks for 3 years. Over the past decade-plus, many have speculated that the Martinique rum called for by Trader Vic would not have been an agricole style rum... a rum made from sugarcane juice. Instead, it would have been molasses-based, dark in color, and nutty. Vic's own words say this rum was like a Jamaican rum with a faint burned character like Demerara. How close this matches to that Mai Tai rum we will never really know.
