This year I bought every single one of my Christmas gifts secondhand—and somehow I convinced my non-thrifting in-laws to do the same so we could host our very first “Thriftmas” brunch. In this video I walk you through the simple rules that made it actually fun (and not stressful): one gift or gift bundle per family, open after Christmas brunch, and the big one—everyone writes a wish list/letter to Santa with 10–20 ideas that includes both specific items (like a boogie board) and broad categories (like “board games”). That one step alone cuts the overwhelm way down, especially when you’re shopping in unpredictable places like thrift stores, estate sales, flea markets, Facebook Marketplace, or eBay. I also share the planning strategy that helped me shop for a bunch of different personalities: I organized wish lists into categories (creative people, collectors/hobbyists, home lovers/hosts, and kids/fun), and I leaned into “bundle gifting” by grabbing a few smaller cohesive pieces to make one bigger, more intentional gift. Then I show exactly what I bought (typewriter, vintage games, model airplane kits, books, vinyl, hosting pieces, etc.) and my favorite part—how I wrapped everything so it doesn’t look “thrifted.” From turning an Amazon box into a decorative gift box, to DIY sunprint wrapping paper, to brown paper + metallic marker stripes, to using vintage linens and handmade name tags, I’m all about adding one special detail that makes a pre-loved gift feel elevated and personal.
