About This Video

In this video I finally stop putting my front porch on the back burner and give it a renter-friendly makeover with a budget of about $500. Even though it’s a tiny little rectangle, it’s the first thing you see before you walk into the house—and you can see it straight from our dining room window—so it really affects how the whole home feels. Instead of doing a full restoration (refinishing the sun-bleached wood door, repainting stucco, repairing everything), I focus on realistic upgrades that distract from the rough stuff and make the space feel curated, functional, and personal. I start with the biggest visual problem: the chipped, discolored flooring. I cover it with IKEA acacia deck tiles (and show how I cut the last row with a jigsaw for a clean fit). Then I bring in secondhand furniture that actually matches the Spanish Revival vibe—iron chairs, a heavy vintage table—and I restore the table properly with a wire brush and direct-to-metal paint (sprayed on with my little paint sprayer obsession). I also tackle the “whack” doorbell situation with a wireless option and a junction box cover hack, upgrade the gross chalky porch light (with help from TaskRabbit), and add plants + pots to make the whole entry feel way more finished.
