In this video, I challenged myself to create a designer-style living room using only IKEA furniture and decor—fully inspired by Dakota Johnson’s viral AD tour. This isn’t an “item for item” copy; it’s a design exercise where I focus on the mood: modern LA warmth, lots of wood, soft and airy upholstery, and that curated-but-calm mix of minimal shapes with personality. I start in IKEA’s Stockholm collection because it’s where I’m finding the most updated, textured, minimal pieces that can actually hold their own in a space like this. I walk you through what works, what doesn’t, and why—like choosing a simple sofa silhouette and “upgrading” it with better fabric, swapping legs to get a more elevated look, and picking foundational storage that can be DIY’d (think: adding a braided leather/wood detail to mimic that iconic record cabinet). I also share renter-friendly styling ideas—sheer curtains, a round coffee table to echo softer shapes, and simple frames that let the art do the talking. And because IKEA rugs can be tricky, I test options and even talk about how I’d DIY a border with dye to get closer to that designer look.
