The story centers on Hong Huoxiu (later Hong Xiuquan, 洪秀全), a scholar in southern China who repeatedly failed the imperial exams in the 1830s. After receiving Bible excerpts from a Western missionary in Canton, Hong fell ill, experiencing a delirious vision where a golden-bearded father (God) and an elder brother (Jesus) tasked him with slaying demons using a sword called Snow-in-the-Clouds. Interpreting this as a divine calling, he concluded he was Jesus Christ’s Chinese brother, destined to overthrow the Qing Dynasty—whom he deemed demonic for upholding Confucianism over Christianity. Hong founded the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom (太平天國, Tàipíng Tiāngúo), blending Christian and Taoist ideals of a messianic "Great Peace." From a compound on Thistle Mountain, he enforced strict rules: communal wealth, no opium, and gender segregation (even between spouses), postponing procreation until his ideal state was established. His movement grew rapidly despite Qing opposition, bolstered by innovative military tactics from advisers Yang Xiuqing and Xiao Chaogui—self-proclaimed voices of God and Jesus—who used a flag-based communication system to outmaneuver larger Qing forces. After repelling Qing attacks, the Taiping, now 40,000 strong, fled Thistle Mountain, moving north along the Xiang River, capturing and abandoning cities like Yongan, Wuchang, and others, while amassing wealth, recruits, and a formidable fleet. In a stunning feat, they conquered Nanjing by tunneling under its vast, under-defended walls, renaming it Tianjing (Heavenly Capital) and massacring 50,000 Manchus. What began as a rebellion escalated into a full-scale civil war against the Qing, setting the stage for their vision of a Christian earthly paradise.
