They began as elite imperial bodyguards, dressed in brilliant brocade and entrusted with protecting the throne. But under emperors like Hóngwǔ and Yǒnglè, they became something much darker: secret police, spies, interrogators, political enforcers, and executioners. They watched officials. They hunted traitors. They ran imperial prisons. They helped carry out purges that killed tens of thousands. And over time, the very force created to protect the Ming dynasty became a symbol of the corruption, fear, and abuse of power that helped consume it from within.
