A lot of people assume the band they see on stage is “the band,” but that’s just not how it works anymore—like 95% of the time it’s the singer plus hired guns, and the lineup can be a revolving door. That’s also why you see so many artists leaning on tracks: they may not know who they’re getting that weekend, but the tracks will nail the part every time. I walk through the main tiers of gigs you’ll run into here. Broadway is the obvious one: live music basically all day, every day, and depending on the bar and the singer, you might see $150 base pay plus tips—sometimes less if the singer keeps more of the guarantee. I also talk about the “we’re only working for tips” line you’ll hear down there, and why I’m telling you straight up: that’s bullshitting—every band is getting some kind of guarantee. Then I move up to road cover gigs (often around $250 plus hotel), direct support slots (roughly $300–$500 a night depending on budget), and headliner situations where pay can range wildly—from retainers to per-night deals—because it really comes down to the artist and how they run their business.
