In this video I react to Joe Bonamassa asking, “Would Eddie Van Halen be as cool if he played a Neural and a Suhr guitar?” and I give you my real take on digital amp solutions like Neural DSP and how they stack up against a cranked tube amp. I break down what Neural (Quad Cortex, plugins, etc.) is actually doing—profiling/modeling real amps—just like my Kemper Mark II, and why I still think Eddie would sound like Eddie no matter what you put in front of him. It’s in his hands, his phrasing, and what he’s hearing. Where I draw the line is the “experience” of a loud tube amp. Eddie’s sound is a cranked-up Marshall/5150 pushing Celestion speakers, plus the Floyd Rose and thin strings (that 9–40 world). That loud, moving-air thing forces you to react, and I don’t think he writes the same riffs or improvises the same way without it. I also talk live sound reality: direct rigs (Kemper/Neural) can honestly beat a mic’d cab out front because you avoid bleed and get a consistent, punchy PA sound. For me, the sweet spot is using a modeler as a tool—sometimes with a tube power amp into a real cab on stage—rather than pretending it’s a “tube amp replacement.”
