In this video I’m over at the Nomadic Customs Service Center with Malachi and Gabe, and we’re doing a full electrical retrofit on a short bus (skoolie) that belongs to Renee—she coordinates TinyFest, so this one’s kind of close to home for me. We rip out the old setup (heavy gel batteries and the existing wiring) and install a full BLUETTI system (the RV5/RV5000 style all-in-one inverter setup with a 48V 100Ah battery). I break down why that 48V battery is a big deal: if you think in “12V terms,” it’s basically like having 400Ah, and unlike gel/AGM where you really only want to use about 50%, lithium gives you way more usable capacity. I also show how I install the BLUETTI Charger 2 in my own van as a simple way to add DC-to-DC charging to a portable power station. I’m a huge fan of alternator charging because you’re literally driving around a generator—solar is awesome for keeping things running, but relying on it as your main charging method can be rough. And because this was a retrofit, we hit the usual speed bumps (hidden inverter behind a wall, battery orientation from the manual, wire extensions, organization), but we get it powered up with lights, shore charging, and app/Bluetooth control—Renee finally has a system she can live with full-time without running a loud generator just to charge basics.
