Today I’m messing with a piece of Apple hardware that most people ignore, but it has a “golden feature” that basically makes it a unicorn: the 2018 Intel Mac Mini. The big deal is on the back—four Thunderbolt 3 ports that can natively do eGPU. Newer M-series Mac Minis have Thunderbolt too, but they don’t officially support external desktop GPUs the same way. On this Mac Mini, Thunderbolt 3 ties into PCIe lanes, so an eGPU dock + a real GPU turns this tiny box into something way more serious. I tested two worlds. In macOS 15 Sequoia, I used an AMD RX 6600 XT because macOS eGPU support is Intel-only and AMD-only (with specific supported architectures). It’s basically plug-and-play when the card is supported, and I showed native Mac gaming with Shadow of the Tomb Raider at 1080p max settings around 70–100 FPS—still limited by TB3 bandwidth, but totally legit. Then I booted Windows 10 through Boot Camp and swapped to an NVIDIA RTX 5060, because that’s how you unlock “play every Windows game” mode. I tested God of War Ragnarok, Cyberpunk 2077, Doom: The Dark Ages, and RDR2, and the takeaway is simple: you’re CPU + Thunderbolt limited, but it’s absolutely playable—and unique to this last Intel Mac Mini generation.
