In this episode, I’m starting a new series where I build a collection from the very beginning—sketchbook thoughts, messy ideas, and all the in-between steps that don’t always feel “shareable.” I walk you through my creative process from sketch to prototype, and I’m honest about the nerves that come with making something new. There’s that constant push and pull between wanting the designs to feel fresh, and also wanting them to feel like me—like they belong in my little world of objects. I talk through how I move from a drawing into an actual form, what I’m paying attention to when I’m prototyping, and the kinds of questions I ask myself along the way (Is this functional? Does it feel balanced? Is it worth developing into a full piece?). I also share some of the fear that comes up when you’re designing in public—because showing the early stages is vulnerable—but it’s also the part I find the most valuable. If you’re building your own collection (ceramics or not), my biggest takeaway is: let the prototypes teach you, and don’t wait until it’s perfect to start making.
