I explain what the report is actually telling you—your revenues, costs, and expenses over a specific period (monthly, quarterly, or annually)—and why the reporting period at the top matters. If you want clarity on questions like “Am I making money?” and “Where is my money going?”, the P&L is one of the most important reports in your business. I break the statement down step by step: revenue (income), cost of goods sold (COGS), gross profit, operating expenses, other income/other expenses, and finally your net profit or net loss. I also share what I want you to look for when reviewing your numbers: revenue trends, whether expenses are supporting growth or getting out of control, and profitability beyond just “high sales.” To stay proactive, I recommend comparing month-over-month or year-over-year results, watching gross profit margin and net profit margin, and looking for red flags like expenses growing faster than income. Your P&L is your financial story in one report—and reading it well means managing your business wisely.
