In this video, I’m unpacking one of the most common questions I hear from small business owners: “Do I need a bookkeeper or do I need an accountant?” I break down what each role actually does and why understanding the difference matters if you want clarity and control over your money. Bookkeeping is the day-to-day work—recording sales, categorizing expenses, reconciling bank accounts, managing receipts, tracking accounts receivable and payable, and generating basic reports like the profit and loss and balance sheet. My focus as a bookkeeper is accuracy and consistency, because clean books are the foundation for everything else. Then I explain accounting, which builds on bookkeeping. Accounting is the interpretation and analysis of your records—using your financial data to prepare financial statements, file taxes, ensure compliance, and give you strategic insight. I share a simple example: a bookkeeper makes sure your $100,000 in sales is recorded and matched correctly, while an accountant looks at expenses, depreciation, and deductions to show true profitability and help reduce taxes. My recommendation is simple: start with a solid bookkeeper first, then bring in an accountant or CPA for tax planning, strategy, and year-end filings. When both work together, you get accurate records, smarter decisions, and peace of mind.
