In this video I’m mixing with my monitors completely off and showing you why I’m such a big believer in good headphones—especially if you’re working in a small room like mine (about 9 ft by 11 ft) and you’re not ready to go full-on remodeling your house with acoustic treatment. I talk through the two “lanes” I’ve used for years: closed-back for recording (isolation for click tracks) and open-back for mixing (less of that “seashells on your ears” feeling). Then I show the newer Beyerdynamic Pro X headphones I’ve been using lately and why they fit that workflow. The real point of the video is Beyerdynamic’s free Headphone Lab plugin. I put it last on my main bus (after my EQ, compression, limiter, etc.) and first calibrate my headphones to a flatter response—either via factory calibration (serial-number specific on select models) or standard calibration for other Beyerdynamic models. Then I turn on Loudspeaker Emulation, and that’s the jaw-drop moment: it genuinely gives me a “speakers in the room” sense of space and panning, to the point I had to double-check my monitors weren’t on. I also show how to tweak angle, ambience, safe mode, and even head-size settings for fine-tuning.
