About This Video

You know those panic moments on a walk when your dog spots something disgusting and you just know they’re going to try to eat it? In this video, I show you how I train an in-motion “leave it” that actually holds up outside—so you can say “leave it” and your dog immediately disengages, even when they’re moving, distracted, and not right beside you. I’m demonstrating with my dog Neirah (yes, the band-aid incident happened) and my client Gus, who started with basically zero impulse control. The big takeaway is that most “leave it” training falls apart on walks because dogs learn it in one context: stationary, close to you, with tidy practice setups. So I walk you through how I generalize the cue step-by-step using my favourite secret tool: containers with air holes. They let the smell out but prevent self-rewarding, which is the hardest part when training at a distance. We build a clear reward ladder (your reward must be higher value than the distraction), then level up from lids on → lids off → outside → real walks, rewarding immediate disengagement and even voluntary disengagement along the way.
