I can’t even tell you how many dogs I’ve worked with who take treats so roughly that I genuinely hesitate before I hand one over. In this video, I walk you through three simple, force-free fixes to stop the “Ow!” moment—two that work immediately with zero training, and one longer-term option that actually teaches your dog to take treats more politely. First, I explain why the common “feed them like a horse” flat-palm tip isn’t my favorite (especially on walks—if your hand isn’t perfectly flat, that sensitive palm skin is in the danger zone). Then I share my go-to immediate solutions: using a silicone squeeze tube for quick licks (cheap, glove-friendly in winter, and easy to count toward meals), and using a silicone pouch with a spoon for short dogs or anyone who doesn’t want to bend down. Finally, I show how I use un-cued impulse control (the same concept I teach in leave-it training) to help dogs slow down and take treats more gently.
