If you’re struggling with your dog barking at sights and sounds outside your home, you’re not alone—this is one of the most common behaviours I’m asked to help with. In this video, I walk you through my exact rewards-based, force-free plan for window reactivity (and yes… I admit I was a hypocrite and didn’t fix my own dog’s window barking until recently). I explain what window reactivity is, why it develops (barrier frustration, guarding, fear, lack of socialization, breed tendencies), and how it often gets accidentally reinforced because “barking makes the scary thing go away.” Then I break down my step-by-step counter-conditioning approach for both sound and sight triggers. For sound reactivity, I show you how to use recordings, a loaded marker word, high-value treats, and ideally a snuffle mat to build calm responses—starting at a volume that causes zero stress, then adding real-life “pairing” by moving the speaker outside the door and eventually practicing when you’re not in the room. For visual triggers at the window, I cover management (furniture setup, blinds, window film) and my favorite training framework: Engage-Disengage, building calm glances first with no triggers, then with real triggers, then progressing to auto-disengagement. I also share what to do on the rare times your dog still barks, without accidentally rewarding it.
