I’m 76 years old and just bought my first e-bike — here’s what every senior citizen needs to know before buying and riding an electric bike. I’m sharing my journey of buying and learning to ride an electric bike safely. In this video, I take you along for my first few rides in an empty parking lot to show you how the bike handles and what to expect from the motor. E-biking is a fantastic way to stay active and mobile, but there are specific safety tips and purchase considerations for senior citizens that the big brands don't always tell you. E-bikes are becoming incredibly popular with seniors, but there are important things you need to think about before you buy one — especially if balance, confidence, safety, or comfort are concerns. About This Video

I’m 76, and yep—I went and got myself an e-bike. In this video I show you the bike, how it’s set up, and what it actually feels like when an “old fogie” tries to learn it from scratch. I take my first practice rides in an empty parking lot and walk you through the controls: the battery, folding points, pedal assist (PAS), throttle/cruise control, horn, and lights. I also tell you straight up what I like, what surprised me, and what I’m not thrilled about. My biggest takeaway for seniors is this: an e-bike is like a bike…and it’s not like a bike. Mine weighs 56 pounds, and getting it in and out of the car is harder than I expected—because I don’t have the muscles I used to have. Starting off can feel tricky for the first few pedal cycles, and that’s exactly why I’m preaching practice, practice, practice before you hit the road. When we crash, it can be devastating, so I’m taking it slow, keeping speeds reasonable, and learning the motor behavior in a safe space. If you’re considering one, think hard about weight (some are closer to 35 lbs), folding, and how you’ll actually use it—exercise, errands, or just letting the motor do the work when you need it.
