I headed just outside Bend, Oregon to check out a real hidden gem: Riley Ranch Nature Preserve. It’s been cold lately, but we had a little “heat dome” and my watch said about 75°, so I figured I’d get out in the sun before it drops back down 20–25 degrees. Bend is a tourist area and an outdoor lover’s dream, but I wanted something simple and peaceful—more of a scenic nature walk than a big, sweaty adventure—so I brought you along to see what this place is like. I stuck mostly to the Juniper Loop and then wandered toward the prettier options like Sage Flat and the canyon viewpoints. The trails are flat and well done—gravel and some paved—so us elderly folks can still get our steps in without feeling like we’re auditioning for a mountain goat job. I found benches along the way, some nice meadows, a view of Mount Bachelor, and a river viewpoint down into the canyon (the Deschutes River). Wildlife was light because it’s still early in the season (just after St. Patrick’s Day), but the serenity, the vistas, and the easy access just a mile or three outside of Bend make Riley Ranch a solid “go-to” when you want nature without a lot of hassle.
