In this video I break down how I built a dramatic rivalry poster for Colorado State vs Wyoming—aka the Border War—using Photoshop and a bunch of real photos composited into one cinematic scene. I walk through my concept process (including the sketches that didn’t make the cut) and why I wanted this one to feel personal, since I spent nearly two years designing for Wyoming before becoming Creative Director at CSU. The whole goal was simple: stir emotion, spark conflict, and make sure somebody feels something when they see it. From there I show the build: I start with the Vedauwoo mountain range (because Wyoming loves it, so of course I’m using it against them), then I “turn off the sun” to force a nighttime mood. I add cowboys scheming in the foreground, rams on the mountain for symbolism and dominance, and then bring in the sky, color tweaks, and faux depth using blur. Once Keshan is placed with my standard player treatment, I create a campfire to justify the lighting, then stack contrast, brightness, texture overlays, and levels/curves to push the drama. The big takeaway: the more personal and story-driven you make a sports graphic, the more fans connect—and the less they scroll past.
