About This Video

In this video I’m testing Dehancer, a film emulation plugin for DaVinci Resolve that goes way beyond “just add grain.” I’m talking film stocks, grain formats, bloom, film damage, film breath, gate weave, and one of the coolest pieces: halation. The twist is I’m not a professional colorist at all—I had never touched log footage until I shot a travel video in the Rocky Mountains, and this project was literally my first time using both Resolve and Dehancer. So this is a true beginner’s perspective on what you can get straight out of the box. I break down my Resolve workflow (my “node bush” of seven nodes) and show how Dehancer becomes the node that makes the whole image click. I walk through film stock choices like CineStill 50D, how I dialed grain (like 65mm at 50 ISO), and how I used tools like bloom and linear print to soften and unify the look. Then we get into halation—why it happens in real film, what remjet does, and how Dehancer can mimic that no-remjet glow. I also test black and white stocks (my go-tos are Ilford HP5 Plus 400 and Kodak Plus-X 125) and talk honestly about the price: it’s expensive, but if you’ll actually use it, it can be a smart investment.
