From the reality that you need a good level in French to truly integrate into French society, to the shock of how low French salaries are compared to other countries. I'll also tell you why your previous accomplishments and credentials from your old life simply won't matter in France, and how daily life here isn't the glamorous lifestyle you see online - it's mostly just regular life with the added bonus of amazing pastries. If you're considering moving to France, understanding these realities upfront will help you prepare for the transition. These aren't deal-breakers - I'm still here after 17 years - but knowing what to expect can make the difference between a successful move and a disappointing experience. Coming to Dijon? About This Video

After 17 years living in France (I moved from the US to Dijon in 2008), I’m sharing four hard truths that I wish more people understood before they pack up and move. These aren’t meant to scare you off—I’m still here—but they will absolutely affect your day-to-day life and how “successful” your transition feels. If you come in with realistic expectations, you’ll be so much better prepared. First, you really do need a solid level of French if you want to integrate and handle real life here—appointments, paperwork, neighbors, work, and all the little things that don’t show up on Instagram. Second, French salaries can be shockingly low compared to what many Americans (and others) are used to, so you have to plan your budget carefully and understand what you’re trading off. Third, your past credentials and accomplishments often don’t carry the same weight in France, and that can be a big identity hit if you’re not ready for it. And finally, daily life in France isn’t a constant movie-scene lifestyle—it’s mostly just…regular life, with the bonus of excellent pastries. Knowing these truths upfront can make the difference between disappointment and a move you can actually build a life around.
