How to Use the Level Switch oth the Harbinger VS12, VS18, and VR18 +4 dBu is pro audio level — stronger, cleaner, balanced. -10 dBV is consumer level — weaker, unbalanced, more noise. They aren’t interchangeable without adjusting gain, so matching levels avoids distortion or low volume. These two terms describe signal levels used in audio equipment. They matter because they tell you how “strong” the audio signal should be, and whether two pieces of gear will match up properly. +4 dBu (Professional Line Level) Used by: Mixers, audio interfaces, PA gear, studio gear. Nominal level: +4 dBu ≈ 1.23 volts. Balanced connections: Typically XLR or TRS. Cleaner / higher headroom: Designed for long cable runs and pro environments. Think: Pro audio, higher signal strength, less noise. -10 dBV (Consumer Line Level) Used by: DJ controllers, home audio gear, older recorders, some cameras. Nominal level: -10 dBV ≈ 0.316 volts. Unbalanced connections: Typically RCA or TS. Lower headroom: More susceptible to noise over long cables. Think: Home audio, entry-level devices, lower signal strength. Key Difference (Simple Math) +4 dBu is about 11.8 dB stronger than -10 dBV. That’s a big jump. This is why plugging a –10 dBV device into a +4 dBu input can sound quiet, and plugging a +4 dBu device into a –10 dBV input can sound hot or distorted. When You’re Connecting Gear Here’s the rule of thumb: If your output is –10 dBV but input expects +4 dBu ➜ Signal will be too low → Turn up gain or use a line booster or DI box. If your output is +4 dBu but input expects –10 dBV ➜ Signal may be too hot → Turn down output or use a pad or line attenuator. 🔴 Subscribe For More Great Videos from 🌴 https://www.youtube.com/c/expertisland?sub_confirmation=1 Some products may have been supplied by the manufacturers for the Making of this video.
