The Hadzabe Tribe of Tanzania is one of the last remaining hunter-gatherer societies. They still maintain their traditional culture of hunting and foraging to provide the clan's food. They are incredibly skilled animal trackers, and rely on bushcrafting skills as a way of life. I traveled to Tanzania to spend time with this fascinating group of people, and to tag along on a real life hunt. Want to collaborate with me? You can reach me at erichanson@thestation.io

About This Video

I traveled to Tanzania for three weeks to explore wildlife and climb Kilimanjaro, but one of the biggest surprises of the whole trip was the culture. In this video, my wife and I visit the Hadzabe (Hadzab) tribe—one of the last remaining hunter-gatherer societies—so we can see, firsthand, what it looks like to live entirely off hunting and foraging. We start early, meet up with the hunters, and head straight into the bush. Watching them prep arrows for different animals and build a morning fire isn’t a “tourist demo”—it’s their real life, and the urgency is real because food is the goal. Once we’re moving, it’s all hustle: running, ducking, diving through brush, trying not to disrupt the hunt while also trying not to get left behind. We don’t have much luck at first—just birds and a rabbit sighting—but eventually the intensity ramps up when they pick up a bigger lead. Back at camp, another hunting party has also been out, and the clan celebrates two monkeys. I’m surprised by how they cook them whole over the fire, and since we joined the hunt, we’re offered a taste—an honor with limited food. We finish with target practice, dancing, and a reminder of how deeply connected their way of life is to the land and the animals.
