Most people head to the big store to get what they need for the outdoors. But that doesn't mean it's the best place to go. I found the best selling small-market gear by reaching out to Lloyd with https://www.garagegrowngear.com/ one of my favorite places to get backpacking gear on the Internet. He directed me to the top selling gear so I could check them out for myself. About This Video

I took REI’s best-selling backpacking gear out into the Arizona desert, then immediately turned around and swapped the whole setup for the most innovative, best-selling “small market” alternatives I could find through boutique vendors (with a big assist from Lloyd at Garage Grown Gear). The goal was simple: use both kits back-to-back so I can make direct comparisons—real trail time, real annoyances, real wins. It’s basically David vs. Goliath… except the sling is a spreadsheet of weights and a whole lot of dusty miles. I compare big-ticket staples like the Osprey Atmos AG 65 to the Gossamer Gear Mariposa 60 (I fell in love with the Mariposa instantly), and I finally got hands-on with the Zpacks Duplex after years of hearing about it. I also tested a quilt (Enlightened Equipment Revelation) against a traditional sleeping bag (NEMO Riff), dug into pads (NEMO Tensor All-Season vs. Zenbivy Ultralite), and got into the nitty-gritty with stoves, water filtration, and headlamps. The takeaway: the boutique kit ended up about 12 pounds lighter and—surprisingly—slightly cheaper overall. If you’re trying to build real outdoor confidence, knowing where big-box gear shines (and where it doesn’t) is the whole game.
