You may be old and haggard but you are up for adventure! In the winter of 2025 I joined a group a highly skilled boaters into my most nerve-wracking adventure yet, packrafting the Colorado River and navigating a class 7 rapids with no prior whitewater experience. Our group hiked into a remote side canyon and navigated Soap Rapids and House Rock Rapids, the first significant rapids in the Grand Canyon. Doing this trip on the shortest day of the year only made it that much more challenging. Battling cold water, intense rapids, and trying to overcome my fears of being swallowed whole by the Grand Canyon made this not-for-the-faint-of-heart adventure one of my more outlandish trips so far. About This Video

I’m standing on the edge of Grand Canyon National Park about to do something I’m genuinely nervous about: hike off-trail down a remote canyon with a tiny inflatable packraft on my back, paddle the Colorado River, and then haul a heavy pack back out another no-trail exit. The river down there isn’t just “a river”—it’s the most important river in the Southwest, and it’s also one of the most fearsome pieces of moving water on the planet. I joined a crew of highly skilled boaters, leaned hard on their experience, and tried to keep my amateur brain from spiraling as we scouted lines and talked consequences. We put in at Soap Creek Rapids (which I totally underestimated), and right away it got real—big, long, technical water where a small mistake can flip you fast. Watching a buddy swim made it even more sobering, but somehow I stayed upright and made it through, exhausted and stoked. Then came House Rock Rapids—class 7 on the Grand Canyon scale, massive holes, huge waves, and the very real reality that if we miss the exit, we’re committed downstream. I ran it, I was basically “just going for a ride,” and when I came out the bottom still in my boat, I felt genuinely proud—like I’d faced a fear and earned a little more outdoor confidence. After the river, we camped under infinite stars, then shouldered 60-pound packs and clawed our way out through Ryder Canyon—mud, chimneys, route-finding, and all. It was one of those adventures that sticks to your soul.
